Bubble Bobble

Bubble Bobble was released on arcade in 1986 and eventually became available on many platforms including NES, Sega Master System, Nintendo Gameboy, Amiga and the Commodore 64. The player(s) control a dinosaur/dragon creature that spits out bubbles. Monsters are typically defeated by first trapping them in bubbles, and then popping the bubbles. The defeated monsters leave behind items to be collected for points.

Parasol Stars

Parasol Stars was released on a variety of platforms in 1991 and 1992. The playable character has an umbrella which is used to accumulate water drops, and then flick those water drops at monsters to stun them. The stunned monsters can also be picked up by the umbrella and launched at other monsters to defeat them.

Wani Wani World

Wani Wani World, also known as Trouble World and Ageo Nara, was released on the Sega Megadrive / Sega Genesis in 1992. In Wani Wani World, the player controls a crocodile armed with a giant mallet. The mallet isn't used to defeat the monsters directly. The mallet is used to smash the ground below, the monsters then fall and get stuck in the gaps, and then the monsters can be smashed by the mallet. Defeated monsters release stars, which defeat other monsters that come in contact with it.

Snow Bros

Snow Bros was released on arcade in 1990 and was eventually released on other platforms, including the NES, Nintendo Gameboy, and Sega Megadrive / Sega Genesis. Enemy monsters can be trapped into giant snow balls by repeatedly throwing snow at them. The monsters are typically defeated by being thrown while trapped in a snow ball, or being hit by a thrown snow ball. Monsters defeated by being hit by thrown snow balls drop items to be collected.

To defeat the enemy monsters, they have to first be squashed flat by the playable character's mallet and then picked up and thrown. Monsters can also be defeated by throwing other monsters into them.

A monster is defeated if it is hit by a falling platform.

Ordinary monsters are defeated, by setting off the bomb monsters to explode in their vicinity. The playable character can stun ordinary monsters by shooting them, and then shift them by picking them up and throwing them. |

In the game Pang (also known as Pomping World, and Buster Bros.), the player controls a man with a harpoon gun that shoots vertically. The main enemies are bouncing balls that split into two after each time they are hit (except for the smallest size, which disappears). There are other enemies (such as birds and crabs), however unlike the balls, defeating them isn't necessary to complete a level. After being hit, enemies sometimes drop items such as weapon power-ups, points items, or items which trigger an effect e.g. the clock item causes every enemy to freeze for a while.

In Bomb Jack, the levels are cleared by collecting all the bombs. During a level, when enough bombs are collected (but not enough to complete a level), the enemies will turn into coins (which can be collected for points) and power-ups. If uncollected, the coins will turn back into monsters.

A French indie game (available online as a freemium browser game) where the player controls a snowman. The snowman can throw snow bombs, which upon exploding, traps the enemy monsters in an ice cube. If the ice cube slides into a hole at the bottom of the screen, the monster dies and items appear. If the ice cube just sits there, the cube eventually thaws and the monster escapes. The bottom of the screen is lethal to the snowman, unless the level has been completed.

Joe & Mac Returns was released on arcade in 1994. The player controls a caveman, who defeats his enemies by first hitting them with his club, then bagging them, and then throwing the bag (which can hit and kill other enemies). Enemies drop items (points and power-ups) and so do rescued cave-girls.

Robbotto is an indie game where the playable characters and enemies are robots. Enemies are defeated by first shooting them with an electrifier, followed by shooting them with a blue ray gun.
