It is set more than 21,000 years in the future, with the known universe being under the rule of an emperor. Within the empire exists the planet of Arrakis, the only source of the spice 'melange'. The spice has a variety of uses, including being vital for intragalactic space travel. The story focuses on Paul Atreides, son of Duke Leto of House Atreides. House Atreides has been granted the right to take over the governing of Arrakis from the rival House Harkonnen. A spice induced prophecy of Paul Atreides taking absolute control over Arrakis, leads to various powerful groups either trying to kill him or protect him.
4 Blue Velvet (1986) Blue Velvet (1986)
Blue Velvet is about a young man whose discovery of a severed ear, eventually leads him to discover a criminal underworld operating in his home town. The second part of the movie is set immediately before the TV series, and covers much of what was implied (but not shown) to have happened during the course of the TV series.
7 Lost Highway (1997) Lost Highway (1997)
A surreal movie revolving around two main characters: A saxophonist who is imprisoned for the murder of his wife; and a young mechanic who is found in the saxophonist's prison cell one morning instead of the saxophonist (neither the prison guards nor the mechanic himself knew how he got there, and is then released). The story also involves gangsters, a mysterious pale faced man dressed in black, and a pair of detectives trying to make sense of it all.
