Grave of the Fireflies is set mostly in Japan during the final months of World War 2, and is about a boy who has to look after his younger sister after their mother dies.

Kiki's Delivery Service is based on the 1985 novel of the same name. It is about Kiki, a 13 year old witch who starts a delivery service for a bakery after moving from her home village to a city.

Porco Rosso is set in Italy during the 1920s. It is about a former WWI fighter pilot turned bounty hunter, who looks like a pig (due to a curse put on him) and is wanted by the Italian authorities for deserting the air force.

Ocean Waves is an animated made-for-TV film, based on the novel of the same name. It is set in the city of Kochi, on the Japanese island of Shikoku, and is about two good friends whose friendship is affected by a new girl from Tokyo, who is transferred to their school.

Pom Poko is a story about a community of magical shape-shifting raccoon creatures, trying to prevent their forest home from being destroyed by urban development.

It is about a young man who his cursed by a demon while saving his village from it. He leaves his village to seek a cure, before the curse kills him. He soon encounters a conflict between the supernatural guardians of a forest, and the humans of Iron Town who are plundering its resources.

My Neighbors the Yamadas is a movie split into a series of vignettes (rather than having one continuous plot), about a family living in urban Tokyo.
