Friendster is a social gaming network that originated in Malaysia, and is very popular in South East Asia. It allows users to play browser games, and chat and play with other users. Friendster has its own gaming currency (Friendster coins) which can be used to purchase upgrades and items. Friendster was launched in 2002 as a general purpose social networking site, but was turned into a social gaming network in 2011.
Habbo (also known as Habbo Hotel) is a Finnish website (available in a variety of languages) aimed at teenagers. Its users can create an avatar and design a room to be used in an online virtual world (with isometric graphics). Users can make friends, chat, organise parties, look after virtual pets, create and play games, and complete quests.
WeeWorld is an online virtual community that was founded in Scotland, in 2000. Users create 2D avatars known as WeeMees. Users can chat in virtual locations, play online games, and make friends.
Zoo.gr is a Greek social networking site with a heavy emphasis on social gaming. In addition to playing browser games, users can connect with friends, upload photos and videos to their profiles, listen to music streamed online, and send private messages. The website has a desktop layout, with buttons which upon clicking bring up what look like new windows (but are only within the browser).
Hyves was originally a general purpose social networking site. Hyves was launched in 2004, and was available in Dutch and English (however most of its user generated content was in Dutch). In 2013 it was relaunched as Hyves Games, a social gaming site.
Miniclip is a free online games website. It was launched in 2001 and is known for having a large and varied collection of games. It is the world's largest privately owned online gaming website.
