Row # Title Image Description
1 Seven Samurai (1954) Seven Samurai (1954)
Seven Samurai (1954) was remade as The Magnificent Seven (1960).

Seven Samurai is set in 1587 during Japan's Sengoku Period (also known as the Warring States Period). The story is about seven ronin (masterless samurai) who agree to defend a village from a hoard of bandits that periodically raid the village of its food supplies.

In The Magnificent Seven, a group of seven American gunmen are recruited to defend a Mexican village from a gang of 40 bandits.
2 Yojimbo (1961) Yojimbo (1961)
Yojimbo (1961) was remade as A Fistful of Dollars (1964).

Yojimbo is set in 1860, towards the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It is about a ronin who arrives at a small town where two crime bosses are competing for supremacy. The two crime bosses each try hiring the ronin.

In A Fistful of Dollars, the story is very similar but has a drifter who is highly skilled with a gun, instead of a ronin who is highly skilled with a sword.
3 Rashomon (1950) Rashomon (1950) Rashomon (1950) was remade as The Outrage (1964).

In Rashomon, a samurai is found dead, and a bandit, a woodcutter, a medium, and the samurai's wife each provide differing claims of how the samurai died.

In The Outrage, the story is very similar but has an aristocratic American Southerner (instead of a samurai) as the murder victim.

  • Each list entry must have a title and/or URL. Entry descriptions and images are entirely optional.

  • Don't worry if a title, URL or description takes more than one line in the input form.  Regardless of whether the input was entered manually or copied and pasted, this website can distinguish between whether the input going to a new line was due to its long length or from the use of the enter key.
  • New list entries are added to the bottom of the list. Chronologically ordered lists should be ordered from the earliest to the latest.
  • If an image is too wide or tall, it would be automatically scaled.
