It is free to have a blog or website with a URL that is a subdomain of wordpress.com, but it costs money to have your own URL. Fees are also charged for special features such as special themes and designs, VideoPress (HD video hosting), no advertising, extra storage etc.
2. WordPress.org (blogging software) WordPress is not just available as a hosted blogging platform, but also as a downloadable blogging engine software that can be used to power self-hosted blogs.
3. After the Deadline After the Deadline is a spell, style, and grammar checker for WordPress, Firefox, TinyMCE, jQuery, and CKEditor.
4. Akismet An anti-comment spam system capable of integrating with many blogging platforms and forums.
5. bbPress Forum software (to add forums to a WordPress.org powered site).
6. blo.gs RSS feed aggregator
7. BuddyPress A social networking plugin suite which allows the running of a social network on a WordPress site, with member profiles, activity streams, user groups, messaging, and more.
8. Cloudup An application for sharing files, videos, links, music, documents, code, text, and more.
9. Ping-O-Matic Ping-O-Matic is pinging service i.e. a service to update different search engines that your blog has been updated.
10. GlotPress GlotPress is a collaborative, web-based software translation tool.
11. Gravatar Gravatar is a blog avatar hosting and profile page website. Gravatar is short for Globally Recognised Avatar. A gravatar is included with every WordPress.com account. Gravatar profile pages can include photos, contact details, and social media and other website links.
12. IntenseDebate IntenseDebate is a feature-rich comment system for WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr and other blogging/CMS platforms.

15. Poster A blogging app for iOS, that is no longer available for purchase.
16. Simplenote A note-taking and sync service based on another Automattic project, simperium.com
17. Scroll Kit A code-free web design tool (that is no longer available).

19. VaultPress A subscription-based protection, security and backup service for WordPress blogs and sites.
20. VideoPress A hosted HD video plugin for WordPress sites
21. Jetpack A super plug-in providing enhanced features to WordPress.org powered sites.
